Colina Drummond was a daughter of John Drummond and Oread Butler. While a young woman, she married fellow-Scot Arthur Hannay. Their son Richard Hannay was born in Scotland in 1874, but was brought up in South Africa from the age of six.

Richard Hannay's parentage is discussed by Philip José Farmer in Doc Savage: His Apocalyptic Life; he is a Wold Newton Family member through his mother.

In his article The Daring Drummonds, Wold Newton scholar Brad Mengel agrees Richard Hannay's parentage as described by Farmer, but argues that Hannay was slightly younger, having been born in 1877, and that the motivation for his father taking him to South Africa was his mother's infidelity and subsequent divorce. Colina, according to Mr. Mengel, subsequently married a wealthy American named Renwick and had a second son, Doc Savage's associate Colonel John "Renny" Renwick, in 1890.
