Alonso Quixano, the self-styled Don Quixote de la Mancha, is the protagonist of the satirical novel Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra (published in two parts in 1605 and 1615). Quixano is a middle-aged Spanish gentleman who suffers a mid-life crisis when he reads too many books of chivalry and becomes convinced that he is a knight-errant, his old nag a fine steed, a local farm-girl his noble lady-love, and - famously - windmills on the skyline are marauding giants.

Quixano is claimed as an ancestor by a twentieth-century parish priest named Quixote, who appears in the novel Monsignior Quixote by Graham Greene.

In The Adventure of the Peerless Peer (1974), Philip José Farmer credits himself as agent in the United States representing the literary estate of Don Quixote.
