Ellen Higgins was a the daughter of a Hungarian Jew who settled in Ireland and converted to Christianity. She married a relative, Rudolph Virag, who had similarly come to Ireland from Eastern Europe, Anglicising his surname to 'Bloom'. Together they had a son, whom they named Leopold.
