Hellboy is a demonic entity that resembles the common conception of a demon (red skin, horns, tail, etc. but no wings) who was summoned to Earth/engendered by Rasputin towards the end of WWII. Raised by friendly humans, he became a monster-fighting agent of an organization called the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense (BPRD). In occult circles, he is considered to be "The Right Hand of the Apocalypse" and is the being that shall allow the forces of Hell to (briefly) rule the world; Hellboy antagonistic toward these prophecies.
The Wold Newton researcher should note that the film version of Hellboy has been wolded into the wider WNU, not the comic version. While nearly all of the comic adventures fall into the WNU under this template, the more apocalyptic adventures are excluded under this reasoning.
