Joseph "Ironside Joe" Clarke is mentioned in Micah Clarke. A cornet in the army of Oliver Cromwell, he was forced to resign his commission in 1650 after killing a half-crazed enlisted man during an argument over the nature of the Trinity. Clarke set himself up in trade instead, married Mary Shepstone, and had several children - Micah Clarke (b.1664), Hosea Clarke (b.1667), Ephraim Clarke (b.1669) and Ruth (b.1673).

According to Philip José Farmer in Doc Savage: His Apocalyptic Life, Ironside Joe was the descendant (possibly grandson) of a Clarke who married Bess, the daughter of Solomon Kane.
